Made to last

Care Guide

How to wash, dry, iron and store your Dress To pieces, so colors stay bright, linen stays soft and every piece lasts season after season.

The essentials

  1. Read the label first

Every piece has a sewn-in care label. It has the final word, especially on embellished pieces marked dry clean only.

  2. Wash less, air more

Hang a piece to air out between wears and spot clean small marks. Fewer washes keep color and shape longer.

  3. Cold and inside out

Wash cold, 30°C / 86°F, inside out, with zips and buttons closed. Delicate pieces go in a mesh bag.

  4. A gentle detergent

A mild liquid detergent, a little less than the bottle suggests. No bleach, and no fabric softener on stretch pieces.

  5. Colors apart

Wash darks, lights and brights separately, and wash deep colors and prints on their own the first few times.

  6. Skip the dryer

Heat shrinks linen, cotton and viscose and wears out stretch. Dry on a hanger or flat instead.

  7. Shade, not sun

Dry and store pieces away from direct sun, which fades color, especially on prints and dark pieces.

  8. Stains, right away

Blot, don’t rub, and rinse from the back with cold water. Hot water sets most stains.

  9. Room to breathe

Wide hangers for dresses and shirts, knits folded, breathable covers. Plastic bags trap moisture.

By fabric

Linen

Breathable and stronger with every wash, linen gets softer over time.

Wash

Cold or lukewarm, up to 30°C / 86°F, on a gentle cycle, inside out. Wash bright and dark linen on its own the first few times.

Dry

Shake it out and hang it in the shade while damp. No dryer: heat shrinks linen and sets creases.

Iron

Medium-high heat while still slightly damp, or steam. A few soft creases are part of linen’s charm.

Store

On a wide hanger with room around it, so it can breathe.

Cotton and denim

Easy to live with, from poplin and voile to denim.

Wash

Cold, 30°C / 86°F, on a gentle cycle, inside out, with similar colors. Wash denim less often, inside out, to keep its color.

Dry

Hang or lay flat in the shade. The dryer shrinks cotton and fades color.

Iron

Medium heat on the reverse, going around prints and embroidery.

Store

Hang dresses and shirts; fold denim and T-shirts.

Viscose, modal and lyocell

Fluid and soft, viscose is at its most delicate when wet.

Wash

Hand wash or use the delicate cycle, cold, inside out, in a mesh bag. Don’t leave it soaking.

Dry

Don’t wring or twist: roll it in a towel to take out the water, then dry on a hanger in the shade. No dryer.

Iron

Low to medium heat on the reverse, or steam. If it feels a little smaller after washing, steam it gently back into shape.

Store

Hanging, so it drapes and doesn’t crease.

Knits

Knits keep their shape when they are handled flat.

Wash

Hand wash cold or use the wool or delicate cycle, inside out, in a mesh bag.

Dry

Press out the water in a towel, then dry flat, reshaping by hand. Never hang a wet knit.

Iron

No iron. If needed, steam lightly from a distance.

Store

Folded, never on a hanger. Lift any pilling with a fabric comb or shaver.

Polyester, polyamide and stretch

Light, smooth and quick to dry; heat is the one thing to avoid.

Wash

Cold, gentle cycle, inside out. Skip fabric softener on stretch pieces: it weakens elastane.

Dry

Hang to dry; it’s quick. No dryer: heat wears out the stretch and can leave shiny marks.

Iron

Low heat on the reverse, or steam.

Store

Hang or fold; these fabrics rarely crease.

Lurex and metallics

Metallic threads catch the light and need a light touch.

Wash

Hand wash cold, inside out, with a mild detergent. Don’t soak, rub or wring. If the label says dry clean, dry clean.

Dry

Roll in a towel, then dry flat in the shade.

Iron

Best not to. If needed, low heat on the reverse with a cotton cloth in between.

Store

Folded in tissue paper, away from zips, hooks and jewelry that can snag it.

Embroidery, crochet and beading

Handwork deserves hand care.

Wash

Hand wash cold, inside out, or use the delicate cycle in a mesh bag. Beaded or sequined pieces: spot clean or dry clean, as the label says.

Dry

Lay flat on a towel and reshape. No dryer.

Iron

On the reverse over a thick towel, so the embroidery keeps its relief.

Store

Folded with tissue paper between the layers; hang only light pieces.

Swimwear

Salt, chlorine and sunscreen are what wear swimwear out.

Wash

Rinse in cool fresh water right after every swim, then hand wash cold with a mild soap.

Dry

Press out the water in a towel and dry flat in the shade. No wringing, no dryer.

Iron

Never.

Store

Only when fully dry, flat, away from sun. Avoid rough pool edges, and give each piece a day off between wears.

Leather and suede

Shoes, bags and belts that age beautifully with a little care.

Clean

Wipe leather with a soft dry cloth; brush suede in one direction with a suede brush.

If wet

Blot, fill shoes and bags with paper and let them dry naturally, away from heaters.

Store

In a dust bag, filled with paper to hold the shape, away from sun.

Avoid

Water, heat and long sun exposure, which dry and crack leather. Condition smooth leather now and then.

Straw, raffia and natural fibers

Bags, hats and earrings woven by hand from natural fibers.

Clean

Brush off dust and sand; spot clean with a barely damp cloth.

If wet

Reshape by hand, fill with paper and let it air dry.

Store

Filled with paper, on a shelf or hook, away from humidity and sun. Don’t crush it under heavy things.

Avoid

Soaking and the washing machine. Keep wooden pieces away from water and perfume.

Jewelry

Earrings, necklaces and bracelets, made to be worn often.

Clean

Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing.

If wet

Dry right away with a soft cloth.

Store

Each piece on its own, in a pouch or lined box, so they don’t scratch or tangle.

Avoid

Perfume, sunscreen, lotions, the pool and the sea. Put jewelry on last and take it off first.

Always follow the care label sewn into your piece: it has the final word, especially on pieces marked dry clean only.
